Before the Wind

Before the wind really started blowing,
we were able to squeeze in a quick photo session this morning.

There's plenty more to sift through, but I think a few of these will be framed and on the wall soon.

Not as Planned

I've already made it clear what I feel are the best things about Easter.  I love Easter, but it seems that this  holiday celebrating the love and power of my Savior sneaks up on me, and I never carry out all the activities that I had intended.  So this year I've made an attempt to be a bit more organized.

We made treats for our precious and lovely friends at daycare and brought our Resurrection Eggs to share for the day.

We spent an afternoon decorating eggs and cookies with friends and had an Easter egg hunt, but I forgot my camera.  Not so organized, huh?  Along with the activities, the kids gathered around as we talked about Jesus using Resurrection Eggs.

There's a theme emerging here:  Resurrection Eggs.  These twelve little eggs are opened while reading Scripture and a story about the death and resurrection of Jesus.  What a great way to prepare our hearts for the Easter celebration...or so I thought.

Last week the kids and I made a trip to the local Christian bookstore to purchase these eggs.  I was only slightly familiar with them, but I knew if they were anything like What God Wants for Christmas, this would be worth it.

With intentions of having a sweet moment sharing the Good News of Jesus with my blessings, I opened the box upon our arrival home and got to work.  J and E sat nicely listening to the words I was reading for about eight seconds.  My plans of an organized and still moment with my children as we allowed Jesus to speak directly to our hearts went down the crapper quickly.  Before I knew it, the kids were fighting over which eggs they could open (thinning patience), hoarding the trinkets so no one else could see them (even thinner patience), and doing ninja moves (patience, what's that?).

The last straw for me was when J proudly announced, "Hey, Mom, the donkey is drinking the wine!"

After a good old-fashioned tantrum loss of self-control complete with yelling, we were able to finish our activity.  After it was all over, I was so disappointed that my plan didn't come together and embarrassed by my behavior.  Sigh!

Later that evening, E was playing with the eggs and "read" to her babies, "Desus died to sabe us."  And J was so excited to go through each egg and accurately recount the story and symbolism of each object to Daddy.  Clearly my sweeties were listening, just not in the traditional (impossible for a two and five-year-old) fashion (wide-eyed statues holding on to my every word) that I had imagined.  Statues holding on to my every word...statues that are two and five.  Seriously, I have a ridiculously warped sense of reality sometimes.

Anyway, after a little reflection, I realized that God used squabbling siblings, ninja moves, and a drunk ass to show me yet again that I need Jesus even during the seemingly simplest moments in my life.  (drenched heavily with sarcasm) Surprise!

For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.   John 3:17

Thank you, Jesus!

My Monkey

J has worked endlessly trying to move his little body across the monkey bars.
He has many more rungs ahead of him,
but tonight he was (barely and with some assistance) able to move from the first bar.

Proudly, he asked if we could text Daddy

and then added, "Mom, aren't you so impressed with my upper body strength?"

Such a Girl

It's going to be a loud summer if E reacts like this...

every time she catches a glimpse of one of these...

This must be what it means to scream like a girl.

God have mercy on us (and our neighbors)!

A Much Needed Boost in Morale

Still up in the air about the May 1st half-marathon.

A six-week illness in the middle
of a training schedule does little for morale
(or other pertinent factors such as fitness and endurance...details, details).

I'm hoping that some new kicks will make up for lost time.

Of course, I know that fresh footwear can't replace training runs,
but the bright white laces and the new shoe smell sure make me (and my feet) happy.

After all, the best way to a runner's heart is through her shoes.

I haven't thrown in the towel yet...

Thoughts

After seeing these pictures a few thoughts quickly came to mind:

1)  I love Spring!

2)  That first picture may be the inspiration for my next scarf when I pick up my crochet hooks again.

3)  How much does a trip to Holland cost and who wants to come with me?

A Painless DMV Experience

Today I received a bright orange postcard in the mail.

It was a renewal notice for my "current drivers license or State ID Card." I'm not a punctuation expert, but shouldn't that be driver's license?

I quickly let that go as I read the next line:

Please go to (website) to see if you are eligible to renew online.

So after the kids were tucked in, I placed my warm laptop on, well, the top of my lap (There's a naming genius out there somewhere.) and soon found out that I, indeed, am eligible for the online renewal of my driver's license.

After a few clicks, questions, and my credit card number, I received a confirmation that I have successfully renewed my license and will be receiving my "document" in the mail.

There was no mention of vision testing, dreadful picture taking, signature, proof of identity, or an actual trip to the DMV in the near future.  Sounds like a good old-fashioned honors system, folks. I find this a bit odd

with all of the security measures everywhere else in this great nation, but it's not going to cause any sleepless nights here.

I'm guessing the same photo (yikes!) must be used again which leaves me with no chance of getting a better one, but at least the shot from five years ago shows no evidence of fine lines or wrinkles.
Plus, a second in front of the camera could possibly result in a stay-at-home-mom-selling-crack-out-of-her-basement picture similar to the one on my new name badge for work.  I don't want to be responsible for your sleepless nights, so I'll spare you from viewing that terrifying one.

I'm also guessing that the traditional DMV sub-standard vision screening didn't keep anyone except the completely blind off the roads anyway, so it was likely deemed as an unnecessary step in the renewal process for most people.  Let us take a moment of silence to pray that most people are responsible enough to know that impaired vision and driving are not a safe mix.

Amen.

So if this all plays out as it is supposed to, I have just had a rather pleasant, efficient, and painless experience with the DMV.  I've never been able to say that before.

Right now I'm believing that I was able to lounge in mismatched clothing while I saved precious time, patience, gas, hassle, and daycare expenses all for a mere additional $3.75 processing fee.  The happy ending won't be official until I have my new license tucked into my wallet, but that might just be the best $3.75 that I've spent in a long time.

The Best Things About Easter

As I was devouring a beloved Reese's Peanut Butter Egg, J asked, "What is that?"

"Besides Jesus, this is the best thing about Easter," I replied.

And just so it's clear, I've compiled a list.  Oh, I love listing.

The Ten Best Things About Easter:

Number 2:

Numbers 3-10:

Not Much Fooling

I completely forgot about April Fool's Day until I checked Facebook this morning.

How could I overlook this day when I have a five-year-old?!?

Because I apparently live in a state of oblivion, I unfortunately was left with very little opportunity to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.  No big pranks from me this year, but that's really not that much different from any other year.  I did, however, explain to my kids what this day was all about, so we had a few little jokes here and there...calling Grandma and telling her Mommy had a baby in her tummy...hiding all of Daddy's underwear and replacing them with one pair of J's Iron Man undies...telling J I peed in his bed while I was lying by him at bedtime.  Nothing big enough to write home about though.

I better not let this opportunity slip by me again.  Any ideas for next year?
