Handsome J

I love quick shots of my kiddos while were waiting to meet friends on a summer day.
(Come back, Summer!  Come back!)
My kids love it when the friends arrive, so they're no longer my photography subjects.

Although I've encountered more cooperative models, how could I ever pass up photos of this handsome guy?

Show me how you really feel about this, J.

Oh, that carefree smile and genuine laugh!
Melt my heart.

Love, love, love this boy!

A Letter to My Five-Year-Old Daughter

I'm not sure where the years have gone, but my sweet baby girl is so excited to be five.
Recently she said, "It's way better than being four."

Dear E,

You add so much to our family including balance.
E, you and I are really wired differently...except when it comes to how seriously we take our food.  That's pretty much the same.
I love how you stop me in my tracks daily by the comments you make.

E, you are so nurturing and naturally tender hearted.  Recently, J lost a shirt that holds a bit of sentimental value, and he was crushed.  You gently responded, "J, you can have my Brevin shirt."  You don't even know how witnessing your nurturing side melts my heart.  You are so loyal and loving to your brother.  I pray this strong connection you two have will be life-long.

E, you take joy in the small things, and I love that about you.
"Mom, I have my tool belt on.  I have a flashlight and my harmonica.  That's pretty much all I'll ever need."

E, you are so silly and can lighten the mood around here anytime.

E, there's no doubt about it.  You are girly!
You love to get all dolled up.  You will only wear the clothes that you like...you'll boldly stand you're ground if you're presented with an outfit that you don't like. For your birthday you wanted a new outfit to wear to your party.  You appreciate shoes a little too much, and pretty nails make your day.  If you were allowed to wear a sun dress and flip-flops every single day, you would.  I have a feeling that for this reason alone you'll choose to live in a warmer climate as an adult.

Your hair is becoming more important to you, and you ask to have it braided so you can get waves in the morning.  Recently you looked in the mirror after a braid was complete and said, "It would look better if I had earrings."  Who says this?!?  A girly-girl, I suppose.  You've never seen me don earrings, so your desire for bling must be innate.  That sparkle in your eye and the extra bounce in your step when we go to the jewelry store just for fun blow my mind.  Although a jewelry store has never elicited much excitement in me, I love to see you so excited about all things beautiful.

E, you have fun.  No one ever has to tell you to enjoy yourself or to lighten up.  You delight in the everyday blessings.

E, you love people, and your friends mean so much to you.  Recently, you were telling me about having a bee fly around you and R at daycare.  No one was hurt, but I could tell you were so concerned about everyone's safety.  When I asked if the bee had to sting someone who would you want it to sting, you quickly replied, "I'd want it to sting me because I'm bigger and I wouldn't want R to have to go through that."  Such as big, unselfish heart you have!

Here's the note you wrote for me when I wasn't feeling well.  I'm not sure how I feel about being on a first name basis :), but you're always showing your love.

E, you are so determined!  You don't shy away from new experiences.  However, when things start to interfere with your girly personality, you'd rather be a princess.  On your birthday, you were supposed to attend your last day of soccer camp.  You opted out of it saying, "I don't want to get sweaty on my birthday."

You could spend nearly every minute of everyday coloring, painting, or creating.  You recently learned to find and print your own coloring pictures.  I'm thinking that you should have used your birthday money on an ink cartridge.  If you're not coloring, you want to help me in the kitchen.  You are such a great helper, and you are quite independent.  I frequently hear, "Let me.  I can do this by myself, Mom."

E, you're a one-girl wrecking crew when it comes to tidiness.  You're room is a wreck all of the time, but that's how you like it.  You love to be able to see all of your things, and you frequently take over an area with all your belongings.  You have a hard time parting with any piece of paper you've ever touched.  You can fill a purse like an old pro.  Last week at flag football you unpacked almost an entire play kitchen set from your bag.  And yes, you were the only one on the sidelines with a spatula and tea pot.  Frequently, I'll instruct you to pack something to entertain yourself if I know we'll be waiting.  This is only half the stuff you brought along to a recent appointment...

You take your food seriously...seriously serious about your food.  You ask me for a snack or tell me you're hungry at least once an hour while you're awake.  That is not an exaggeration.  You have a sweet tooth and would eat junk food at any given moment.  You even left quite the impression on Uncle M when he joined us at Valentino's.  I'll have you know, impressing Uncle M with food intake is quite the accomplishment.

Although you don't always take much interest in the sporting events we attend, you go without complaint because you know that there will be a stop at the concession stand.

E, you forego the "right way" for cute all the time.  When I instructed you to circle the two like items, you said, "I know I should circle the big snails, but I had to circle the baby snail because it is just so cute."  That would never have crossed my mind.  Thanks for offering another perspective in my "right way" world.

E, you are beautiful, inside and out.  You already declare your love for Jesus.  You say He lives in your heart.  I pray this love continues to grow as the days pass.  I am honored that God picked me to be your mom.  Actually, when I really take a moment to consider that and all it means, it almost takes my breath away.

I take this mom responsibility quite seriously, and your perceived level of happiness is not and will not be my first priority as your mom.  I know someday when I refer to you as my baby girl, you'll roll your eyes.  I'm still going to do it though, so you'll have to find a way to deal with it.   I will say "no" and embarrass you around your friends.  You will have to keep doing laundry and cleaning the bathroom.  You're not always going to agree with the rules I have or the boundaries we draw.  Once again, you're going to have to get over it.

All that said, I so look forward to growing this mother-daughter relationship that we have.  I have no idea what God has in store for us, and I don't know what curve balls will be thrown our way or how many days we have together here on earth.  Regardless of the unknowns, I want you to know that I love you.

E, I love you more than you'll ever know, and I am proud of who you are.

Hugs, kisses, and love,

Mom

Safety

As I parent, I frequently find myself having safety related talks with J and E.  From fires to strangers to on-line creeps to bike helmets to monkey bars to crossing the street, kids these days never get a break from safety discussions.

Here's a conversation I found myself in this morning...

Me:  So what would you say if somebody tried to touch your private parts like your vagina?

E:  I don't know.

Me:  Maybe you could say something like "Get your hands off me!"

E:  Or maybe something like "You have your own privates.  Go touch your own privates!"

Me:  Ya, that might work too.

A Timely Correction

On Wednesday, E and I were slurping down our soup at lunch when she pointed out that I didn't correctly transcribe the Galatians verse that's been up in our kitchen for a couple of weeks.  The greatest daycare provider, H, brought this up to J and E this week, so E relayed the message.  And, yes, I inadvertently skipped an entire line when I was copying the verse.  Oops!

Part of me thinks that since "gentleness" is nearly a foreign concept for me most days, maybe my oversight wasn't just a mere coincidence.  Regardless, God used this omission in a big way by obviously and deliberately placing "gentleness" on my mind and heart.  And, boy, was the timing perfect for this.  The last day or so has required mega doses of gentleness...and love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control.

As I've mentioned recently, school has been bumpy this year, but on Wednesday afternoon, it went from bumpy to train wreck.  I've been getting more vocal and probably too honest as the weeks have gone by, but this was enough to send me from a gentle simmer to on fire.  Thankfully, I had a whole night to ask the Spirit to give me gentleness like I've never had before, so I was able to have a somewhat rational conversation with the principal this morning.

I'm so thankful that God has an unlimited supply of fruit to offer me because we're only through the first quarter.

Is it May yet?

Halloween Wars

The kids love to watch "Halloween Wars" on the Food Network.  So it was only fitting that we (minus Steve...somebody needs to work around this place!) spent our Columbus Day at home creating edible art.  We carved pumpkins a couple of weeks ago (and already tossed them because they were rotting...early bird gets the worm though), so J suggested we use just food items for today's creation.  His list of needed supplies was lengthy, so we had to keep things within reason.

We had such a fun time creating our spooky scene.  J and E both had some pretty interesting stories to go with their masterpieces. I'm not sure when it happened (probably when we let them watch Gremlins last year), but we're apparently past the cutesy stuff and into the gory, creepy Halloween phase now.

Proceed if you dare!

J's frightening creation...

Self-control

This verse has been up on our kitchen wall for a little over a week.  The kids have been working on memorizing it, and both are doing a great job of it.

As much as this makes me feel like I really suck, this verse also leaves me so thankful for the Holy Spirit because there is no way e.v.e.r that I could live out even one of these characteristics all by myself...e.v.e.r.

So Friday I was driving down the street when I noticed a car in my rear-view mirror weaving in and out of traffic going way too fast.  When the driver cut me off and narrowly missed my front bumper, I was more than irritated.

Me:  Aargh!!

E:  What's wrong, Mommy?

Me:  Ugh.  People are just so stupid sometimes.

E:  Mom, you need to work on your self-control.

Very well then.  I do need to work on my self-control.  It looks like I not only have the Holy Spirit to help but also an accountability partner.

Tired of This

Second grade.

Sigh.

This school year has been interesting so far.  Interesting as in a bit frustrating and unnecessarily complicated.  The first quarter is nearly complete, and despite an impressive amount of our time spent communicating with several educators, there is still no real plan in place for J.

We've identified about a three hour time frame when he is pretty much either left to his own devices or wasting away in boredom as he's expected to participate in lessons that he has already mastered.  "Mom, we're learning about short o and long o.  Seriously."

His teacher is absolutely wonderful, but of course she has to do her job...as in teach the 20+ other students in her class, so this leaves J without much to do for awhile.  Thankfully, J loves to read, so he spends a lot (A LOT!) of time reading in leisure to pass the day.  In fact, one day he read 180 pages of a book during school hours.  Blowing through Diary of a Wimpy Kid might be his kind of fun, but this seems to be an excessive amount of free time.

At least he's reading though...sometimes.  This weekend he revealed that his friend taught him how to play Super Mario Bros. on a website that they found during their independent learning time.  Today J happily reported that he successfully completed seven levels.  Awesome.

When he does get special assignments and tasks, he doesn't have access to any instructional help if he does have questions.   And since he's seven, he's going to have questions. This has left his teacher feeling inadequate because she can't give him the time he needs, and it has left J frustrated that he is being put off over and over again.

When a seven-year-old boy has about three unstimulating, frustrating, and mostly purposeless hours right smack dab in the middle of his school day every single day, he's bound to begin exploring survival techniques.  For awhile he was ducking out of class and showing up for math about 25 minutes early; however, that was short lived.  When I picked him up last Tuesday, he said, "After lunch today, all I could think about was running as fast as I can out the door to go home.  My legs were telling me to do it.  I could actually feel my feet moving."  When I asked him what spurred this, he replied, "Because I just couldn't take it anymore."

So we've effectively just pushed one of the most rule-bound, compliant children in the world to the edge by our inaction.
we = district level + front line educators + school administration + parents
 we = failing

Frustration galore, I tell ya.  And there really doesn't appear to be a great resolution in sight either...kind of like Congress right now.  Puke.  There's plenty of ideas and opinions, but the resources to implement these possibilities are non-existent.  Frankly, I'm tired of this.  I'm having a really hard time being patient.  So far I've actively resisted being that mom, but I've been having to talk down my inner Mama Bear more frequently lately.  Not good, not good.

At least J's teacher is doing the best she can with the resources she has (or doesn't have).  We really are so blessed to have her on his side right now.  She's been implementing some great close reading and corroborating exercises for J and the two other boys in his guided reading group.  She's also amped up his spelling list.  She asked how we felt about the spelling lists last week at parent-teacher conference, and we honestly told her his words were great, but he still knows most of them the night he receives his list.

She must have took that to heart because this is J's spelling list for this week...

Woah!  As far as spelling goes, we're not messing around anymore, folks.  I think we'll all be learning a little something this week.  Truth:  I had to google the definitions of more than one of these words.

Hopefully, this is a sign of the good things to come.

Sigh.

Second grade.

Movie Time

E:  Mom, you know that movie I was watching?  Umm, you know that one.

Me:  I'm not sure which one you're talking about.

E:  You know, umm.  Oh yeah, diarrhea of the princess!

#IDon'tTweet

I love my iPhone too much, and I admittedly am a world-class Facebook stalker.  However, I don't tweet. Or is it Twitter?  Whatever.  It doesn't matter if I'm up on the lingo because I don't even have an account.

Unfortunately, being out of the Twitter loop does not spare me from all the #rage though.

So it was especially funny to hear this the other night while E was racing through her prayers so she could dig into her birthday mac 'n cheese...

E:  (said in a fraction of a second to conclude her prayer) Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Amen. Praise the Lord!

Steve:  Did she just say "hashtag Holy Spirit"?
