Snow Day: Take 2

There wasn't all that much snow, but we received an early morning phone call informing us that school had been canceled again due to weather.  Hallelujah!

J and E played outside for a long, long time...

Then it was back inside for hot cocoa and more science experiments.

Making slime entertained them for a good hour...

Slime and clothes don't mix well.  I spent far too long scrubbing a $4 pair of leggings.  That's all part of the fun, right?

We also made a rain cloud out of shaving cream and dissolved an egg shell in vinegar.

Of course, the volcanic eruption always is a crowd pleaser around here.

We ended the day by venturing out to J's final basketball game of the season.

I'm not much of a winter gal, but I'll take the snow days if they're offered.

Now it's time for spring...

Snow Day: Take 1

A hyped up Winter Storm Q (when did they start naming blizzards anyway?) led to every school in the area declaring a snow day the night before.

What our snow day looked like at the normal school starting time:

at lunch time...

mid-afternoon when school would have been dismissing...
Although the snowfall never did amount to all that was predicted in our area, we took full advantage of our day at home.

We read Bartholomew and the Oobleck and then made our own oobleck.

If you've never made oobleck, you must.  It'll blow your mind.  A liquid and a solid all at the same time...how can that be?!?

We followed that craziness up with baths...not because that was the plan but because it was necessary.
Oobleck + J + E = messy

Then it was time to learn a new game, Old Maid.

Later, the kids invented their own game.

Having never left the house for the entire day, J and E burned off a little extra energy before bedtime with their own version of the Harlem Shake.
(No children were harmed in the making of this video.)

Love these two!

Seven!

There's one handsome seven year old in our family.

Such a special day he had!

Cake and candles for breakfast...

dinner at Grisanti's...

A new Betta named Phelps...

some special phone calls...

a delicious birthday cake...

more candles and a birthday song...
the best piece of cookie, a Chinese seven, for the birthday boy...

J, you are so incredibly special to us.  We love every bit of you!  You are truly a blessing to our family.  Happy birthday, China Jack!

Back at It

Due to the elevated chaos level around here lately, E has only had a very, very limited amount of interaction with other children in the past two weeks.  She's definitely more of a social creature than homebody J, so she was delighted to head back to daycare today to see her friends.

Conversation after I picked her up today:

Me:  Did you have fun today?

E:  Yes!

Me:  Was it fun to see your friends and play again?

E:  (in a completely matter-of-fact, respectful, and non-sassy tone)  Ya, it was fun to get a break from you too.

Whew!

We've had an eventful (and not the exciting kind of eventful) past few weeks around here.

J had influenza, keeping him home for a week of school.  I started on Tamiflu just as my symptoms started so the duration of illness was rather short.  We made it through that feeling pretty good because 50% of the family was physically unaffected.  Whew!

A few days after the flu stuff, my throat was hurting more than it should be.  With the discovery of white patches way back on my throat, I headed to urgent care to find out I had canker sores...painful canker sores, but not infectious or contagious.  Whew!

A little over a week later (last Thursday), I had scheduled surgery.  The procedure was routine in nature, but there's always a bit of anxiety with any surgery...especially when your son is overly concerned about your mortality.  The night before surgery he asked, "What are the chances mom is going to die?  One percent?  Two percent?  You can tell me.  It's okay."   I had a one-night hospital vacation and then was able to come home to my babies with the standard restrictions of no driving and no lifting.  I didn't die.  Whew!

The day after I came home from the hospital, E woke up with a fever, sore throat, and rough cough.  Steve took her to the doctor so influenza could be ruled out.  No influenza.  Whew!

The day after that the garage door/opener broke.  E's fever continued but responded well to ibuprofen. Steve went to church by himself.  J's Chinese class was canceled due to Chinese New Year (You know you've stepped outside of your box as a Caucasian Christian living in the Midwest when the class you child is taking is canceled for Chinese New Year but is scheduled on Easter :)...he's loving the symbol writing the most).  I was feeling good and a dear family stopped by with a favorite lunch.  Food provided, pain controlled, fever at bay during the day.  Whew!

The day after that E's fever continued and her cough was terrible.  Steve served a round of ibuprofen to his patients and went to work.  The girls had a good day at home and a church friend blessed us with a meal.  Food provided and sickies survived the day on their own.  Whew!

The day after that E's fever continued and her cough was terrible.  She felt well enough to play multiple games of UNO and Go Fish.  I approached my lifetime limit of Max and Ruby.  But we made it through another day thanks to the television, a meal from a sweet friend, the computer, and lots of prayers.  Whew!

The day after that E's fever continued and her cough was terrible.  That was today.  Her terrible coughing kept us up for the better part of the night, and she was miserable upon waking.  After taking a little listen to her lungs this morning, I made my diagnosis and we headed off to the doctor again.  Unfortunately, after a long week and a poor night's sleep, I had no more "Whews!" left in me this morning.

The camel dropped to his knees.  The last straw:  E has pneumonia.  She's fine though...oxygenating well and stable, antibiotics ordered...and I knew she was fine, but I still cried after we left the doctor's office.  Craving my go-to but off-limits stress relievers of running, hot baths, or alcohol (sometimes all three), the cumulative effect caught up with me.  I attended my own brief pity party in the parking lot of Bed, Bath, and Beyond while we waited (and waited) for the pharmacy to prepare her prescription.  Lots (L.O.T.S.) of prayers, a nice meal from a church friend, a fabulous chauffeur for J to get to swimming lessons, plenty of f-bombs in my head (so therapeutic!), a shower, a hug from Steve, and a nap helped me pull it all together again just in time to lay by the kids for their normal bedtime routine.

The good news:  I felt well enough (and safe enough...their unintentional elbow and knee jabs can take me out when I'm without a tender body) to lay by the kids at bedtime for the first time in a week.  I can already feel that things are shifting back to normal around here.  Soon enough the camel will be walking and I'll be able to run, drink, and soak in the tub again.  Whew!

Is Winter Over Yet?

Well, the viral something or other that's supposed to be no biggie is really hanging on and making poor E miserable.  There are times when the ibuprofen is peaking that she's feeling pretty good and enjoying the Max and Ruby marathon, ice cream, and Gatorade, but when the medication is wearing off and the 103.3 degree fever returns, things are pretty rough.

I'm feeling pretty inadequate as I'm not allowed to give the mommy snuggles that always make things a little better (at least for me).  Daddy has definitely stepped up to meet all of our needs.  I'm pretty sure he's been asked to do a million and one favors for all of us today.  After all of our demands, he probably is secretly hoping that he can get out of here and go to work tomorrow.  I'm sure any escape is looking pretty good right now.

Just six weeks into 2013, we've surely exceeded the number of doctor visits and pharmacy stops that we had in all of 2012.  I'm so done with winter and so is our flex spending account.  That groundhog better be right about an early spring.

How to Freak Your Mom Out...

Two days after your mom has had surgery, wake up with all of the classic influenza symptoms.

Yep, that will freak her out alright.

Thankfully, the swab was negative, so it's just a viral something or other.

No biggie.

Daddy needed another patient to take care of anyway.

Can't We Have Any Secrets?

J:  Mom, if you die will they put an article in the paper?  Like one that says what your last words were and stuff?

Me:  I don't think there would be a special article, but there might be an obituary.

J:  What's that?

Me:  It's kind of like a death announcement that's in the paper to let people know that you died, and it might tell a little about a person's life.

J:  Hope they don't tell about that one time you got drunk.

Baking

The kids made banana bread the Un-Martha Stewart way.

Measuring may not have been exact.

The recipe was varied.

Things didn't look pretty all the time.

Clean up required ten (ten!) towels.

But it was tasty fun, and half the kitchen floor got washed.
Take that, Martha.
